Our History

Beginning in The '30's

Service Iron Works was founded in Detroit in the mid 1930's as an ornamental iron fabricator. Supplying decorative rails and guards to both business and homeowners alike. The 1940's saw a world at war and Service Iron was there providing railing for ships and outfitting tractors to tote bombs. When the war ended the Detroit area saw a tremendous building boom and Service Iron went through another transition. To supplying house beams, columns, and lintels to the housing subdivisions popping up all over Detroit.

The '50's - Steel Joists Added

In the 1950's the housing market became flooded with people supplying steel and prices and profit margins continued to decline. So the management of Service Iron decided they needed to seek a new direction. That new direction was to supply the growing market of steel joist. The product line was engineered, the testing completed, and licensing from the City of Detroit granted. Service Iron continued to grow as a steel joist producer and within a few years more and more customers wanted the company to supply structural steel, metal deck and installation services. Those capabilities were added to satisfy our customer needs for a one-stop supplier.

The '60's - Structural & Misc. Steel Production

The 1960's saw the joist business being taken over by a few large regional and national suppliers, so Service Iron stopped producing steel joist, started buying from the large producers and concentrated on increasing their structural and miscellaneous steel producing capabilities. Service Iron was becoming more and more that one stop source for quality products and services to the commercial, office, institutional, and industrial construction market.
